The Isokos are a unique and delightful people, a distinct ethnic group made of seventeen (17) clans with a total of about 500,000 people. Isoko occupies a space of land south east of Delta State of Nigeria; bounded by Kwale to the North, Urhobos to the West, Ndosimili/Aboh to the East; and the Ijaws to the South. The Isokos are a peaceful people as there are no records or history of conflicts or wars between them and their neighbors in the past.
Their occupation is farming, trading fishing and teaching. They thirst for education and they are progressing in this area. It is a happy note that today Isokos can be found in most of the professions in Nigeria, e.g. Law, Medicine, Engineering, Accounting, Education, Architecture, Survey, Estate Management, Journalism, Teaching, Business Administration, and general business, to name a few. The founder of Synagogue Church of All Nations (SCOAN), Temitope Joshua, was no where to be found on Monday at the start of the trial over the collapse of a refurbished six-storey building inside his church premises in 2014.

Economic Crisis: ‘We can’t afford N18,000 minimum wage,’ Governors say

Nigeria’s 36 governors have said that they can no longer afford to pay the N18,000 minimum wage to their workers due to the economic crisis in the country.
The governors, under the umbrella of theNigerian Governors Forum(NGF), made the submission during a meeting at the Presidential Villa which ended early on Thursday, November 19, 2015.
“We resolved that we must look at ways to enhance revenue generation and at the same time look at ways to cut our overhead costs more especially the political office holders’ salaries and other overhead expenses,”NGF Chairman and Zamfara State Governor,Abdulaziz Yarisaid.

FGN bans I better pass my neighbour, generators

The Federal Government of Nigeria,FGN, hasbannedthe importation of a very common brand of electric-power generator popularly called “I better pass my neighbour, IBPMN” or Tigergenerators.
The Controller of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Federation Operations Unit Zone A, Lagos, Madugu Sanni Jubrin, made this known to journalists on Tuesday, November 17.
“The smaller generators have been banned by the Federal Government because it is causing air pollution and destruction of our lungs and breathing system,” Jubrin said. “That is why they have banned it but people are still interested in smuggling them in, that is why we intercepted them.
“If you go to the market, you still see them because people have imported them before the ban. So it is the leftover they had before the ban that they are selling because the law did not backdate the ban and it is not an absolute prohibition. It is prohibition by trade which means you cannot bring it in large quantity and sell to the public. Banks lock in funds of customers without BVNs By: Adeshina Oluwaseyi, Desola Akindele, Friday Atufe, Matthew Dadiya, Samuel Taiwo Mayowa

Commercial banks in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja and Lagos, on Monday, complied with Central Bank of Nigeria’s (CBN) directive to restrict all accounts without a Bank Verification Number (BVN) from October 31, 2015.
This is even as the CBN said it has extended the BVN registration deadline till January 31, 2016 for Nigerian Bank customers in Diaspora.
Officials of some commercial banks told our correspondents that all accounts without BVNs had been frozen for debit bank transactions.

Isoko, people of the northwestern part of the Niger delta in Nigeria, speaking a language of the Kwa branch of the Niger-Congo family. The term Sobo is used by ethnographers as a cover term for both the Isoko and their neighbours the Urhobo, but the two groups remain distinct from one another.
The Isoko economy is based on farming, fishing, and the production of palm oil and kernels. The main food crops are yams and cassava, supplemented by corn (maize), beans, peppers, and peanuts (groundnuts). There are petroleum-producing fields in the area inhabited by the Isoko.
The family, consisting of a man, his wife or wives, and their children, lives together in a compound; one or more groups of families related through patrilineal descent occupy a ward of the village. The village itself is a compact settlement, usually containing fewer than 500 persons. Both men and women are grouped into age-grades, each with particular responsibilities. The duties of the women’s grades include the ritual surrounding fertility and childbirth, and control of the market. Young boys perform simple communal tasks; adult men do major community work and are the fighting and executive unit of the village; older men form the nucleus of the village council. Membership in certain title organizations is available on payment of fees and is an important source of political authority. The Isoko never formed a single social or political unit; local communities remain autonomous.
Traditional religion includes belief in a creator god and his messengers, in spirits, and in ancestral spirits. Diviners are consulted to explain failures in any activity, on occasions of illness or death, and before economic activity. Witches are believed to be organized into groups that meet regularly in large trees. Many Isoko, however, are now Christians.
